If you read Pathways – the official newsjournal of the Missouri Baptist Convention – you notice on the top of every issue this year has been a heading “The Reformation: 500 years”. In celebration of this 500th birthday of a significate event in the life of the church, we will be preaching the month of October 5 foundations of the Christian Faith. These have been called the Five Solas. Teopedia.com[1] says,

The Five Solas are five Latin phrases (or slogans) that emerged from the Protestant Reformation intended to summarize the Reformers’ basic theological principles in contrast to certain teachings of the Roman Catholic Church of the day. “Sola” is Latin meaning “alone” or “only” and the corresponding phrases are:

  • Sola Scriptura, by Scripture alone.
  • Sola Fide, by faith alone.
  • Sola Gratia, by grace alone.
  • Solus Christus, through Christ alone.
  • Soli Deo Gloria, glory to God alone.

Each week will be a different Pastor preaching. I will kick off the series on October 1 with Scripture alone. Pastor Michael Beatty will be October 8 preaching on faith alone, followed by Deacon Adam Cochrun preaching grace alone, then Pastor Jason Gunter preaching Christ alone, and finishing the series will be Pastor Tyler Eiland preaching glory to God alone.

Please be praying for this incredible opportunity to proclaim these foundations of the Christian Faith.

Pursuing Him,

Pastor Doug i
